Wesa Ganna Speed Yous Away

Well I guess you can call it a reboot if the characters are newly refreshed and the ship looks like a ’66 corvette. That’s why the 'vette is in the movie, they want to compare the Retroprise to technology we have today. It’s even being built on the ground like our current space shuttles. Star Trek used to be about breaking new ground, back when starships were so advanced they could only be built in orbit, and even then at the same time the show could be related too. But now they’re ripping off Iron Man which had much the same themes of human achievement if you notice in the scenes where Tony builds Mark II and Mark III and compare that to the trailer. It's like Star Trek is no longer the leader when it comes to imagination.

Disney has a new movie “Bedtime Stories” and it looks like the little kid conjured this new Trek. I guess some people burst into flames when they hear the word “continuity.” Probably the same people who think the old Star Wars was replaced by the Prequels and this Trek was made for them. “Like something out of a dream,” Luke said.

What’s sad about this movie that it looks like a buttkickingly good movie on its own excluding the changes. And sci-fi fans have already been asked to accept the movie on its own merit like the Animated series and Shatner’s ongoing book series. I like the uniforms and the ship overall but not as a shootingstar faceplant on the classic Constitution-class. Swirling special effects alone doesn’t do it for me and I just don’t want to go see this film no matter how much hype there is on the internet.

But what would be the reception be if this was a whole new crew in a new time period post-TNG? Oblong the ship’s hull and add some light up warp nacelles, it would be an instant hit with those retro curves. Instead they seem to want to thumb the deflector at the old guard trekkies while spinning wildly beyond the stars. This would have been a perfect time and a brilliant way to bring the franchise back to life while keeping respect to previous incarnations and heck, even a project as obscure as the Star Trek Online MMO was built to do that.
