This is how you handle alternate timelines. I notice in this episode the handy transparent displays and chunky hardware resemble the new 1701 bridge which certainly includes the new ship with the look of alternate ships from different timelines. Perhaps the sequels to the new Trek movie will address the new canon situation as artificial and the new TOS crew can find their mission not in exploration, but in the repair of the universe and TOS timeline. That would be cool, otherwise TNG and DS9 never really happened and Star Trek movies will reboot every ten years like James Bond or Doctor Who. While that method can create audiences with an 79 million dollar opening weekend it's tough for me to watch Trek's epic history of human achievement replaced with clever product placements and random events conspiring together into some funky jungle fever on every bridge console's screen saver.
Knowing full well the perception that Trekkies must be punished because they are unsightly nerds, the new Star Trek universe is ultimately fatalistic existing as an ethereal dagger to the belly of class envy, I equate the destruction of Vulcan with ripping the Constitution of the United States to shreds. Only unlike this new crew of random punks no more mature than the average fraternity, I refuse to accept anything remotely like stamping my forehead with a Nokia logo. Indeed as the black Captain America lost to the bowels of Marvel Comics history like the Tuskegee Experiment suggesting Steve Rogers' inherent racism and later Hal Jordan-esque condemnation culminating with the assassination of an icon, I believe this new Star Trek is the first of many greater offenses against pop culture to be committed during the Obama era.
Lord Ba'al demands a sacrifice!
So far I can already say that Roberto Orci, who devised the story with Alex Kurtzman, presupposes that it is not necessary to "fix" a time travel accident because the old timeline still exists somewhere. But in *all* cases of incursions so far the starship crews went to great lengths to repair the damage, which is a clear sign that there is supposed to be only one timeline. And really, after going back and forth again, the timeline was usually restored. So the excuse that the old TOS timeline persists may not hold, unless Spock Prime, who remains passive and does not recommend his younger self either to fix anything, knows something that the fans who have been watching the series for 40 years are not aware of.
