"The Gore Alert! Set phasers for rainbow!"
TOS was made for TV where production is very different than for movies. The sets were cheaply produced and redressed to be used as many times as they needed. What this new generation of creative brainiacs have concluded is that Star Trek is no longer viable as its own property to be built on real-world production value and must barrow heavily from other movies. In this case it’s been cited many times that Trek should be more fantasy-biased like Star Wars.
But Star Wars has barrowed so heavily from LOTR already what’s the use? Well, there were no dwarves or elves in SW so their counterparts could be Tellarites and Vulcans. Klingons translate perfectly as the orc horde and Romulans as dark elves. Instead of magic you have technology then get back to the good ol’ TOS theme of slaying pagan gods as an effort of saying “HA HAH we made it without you!”
Nah, let’s see Sylar pick up the Declaration of Independence to renounce his alien half and fly into wookiee rage. Fo’ shizzle. But drop the America part, yo. Dat racist shit.
After Enterprise which was grafted into canon anyway there’s no reason for classic Trekkies to be engaged by this. Trekkies are Libertarian (mostly it seems) at heart and even they aren’t turned on by Lucas’ Hindu moral equivalence. Under that sliding scale instead of being a metaphor for the USSR, Klingons will be compared to rednecks and the Undiscovered Country will only break yer back. I’m sure as an action flick this new movie will be pretty cool for fools to check out but beyond that there’s nothing worth noting to build the next 40 years on.
If they gave a damn about Star Trek the new movie would take place post-VOY and throw in some LOTR themes. Nothing is more respected than Lord of the Rings, why not take inspiration from that than yet another celebration of the great failures of the 20th century?
God damn the Romulans, it's in the bible for killing Star Trek!
See? It's easy!
